Space planning requires the ability
to visualize space in three dimensions and a keen sense of composition,
scale and proportion. Departmental workflow and headcount programming
are key components of effective space utilization.
LAI has established itself as a leader
in the proper and flexible layout of space, providing choices and
opportunities for multi-phase use of demised premises.
Technical knowledge and familiarity
with furniture and equipment specifications are required to make
dimensional calculations, propose appropriate furniture options,
specify ergonomically correct furniture and equipment, and comply
with applicable building and fire codes, including the requirements
of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other accessibility mandates.
Some clients seek space planning
to address specialized functions (laboratories) or work flows (departmental
"churn").
In these cases the designers at LAI
must have expertise regarding the work processes that take place
in the space and the special equipment involved. Entertainment,
videoconferencing, medical facilities, retail, and kitchen design
are examples of these functions.
